LO2: Treatment

TREATMENT

The identity of Sheffield

THE BRIEF

I have been asked to make a series of images that explore and show the identity of Sheffield.

CONCEPT IDEA

My idea for my final photos is to show Sheffield in different fields and genres of photography. I am looking to create images that will grab the attention of people, draw them in to looking at the pieces and that the viewers will be able to recognise where the photos were taken.
Some of the techniques I am planning to use are the centre of interest technique, the viewpoint technique, colour/monochrome, narrative and texture.
I have chosen these techniques because they will help me express the identity of Sheffield in my photographs. I will use different angles, high and low, when taking my photos to give the viewers different perspectives of my photographs. I will have my images in both portrait and landscape orientation. I will use a variety of locations, indoor and outdoor, to show the identity of Sheffield in different ways. I will use a shallow depth of field in one of my photos to make either the object or person stand out from the rest of the image. I will vary the shutter speed in some of the photos, creating long exposures of car lights.

TARGET AUDIENCE

My photos are aimed at a wide ranged audience. They will be suitable for any gender as the photos will be of general subjects. They will appeal to a more rational audience, as in the NRS 'ABC1' scale, my images will appeal best to the 'A' - Upper Middle Class, 'B' - Middle Class, 'C1' - Lower Middle Class and 'C2' - Skilled Working Class.

KEY MILESTONES

I am aiming to complete my planning of my photographs by the end of February, this is so that I will have time to take all the photos within time so I can have enough time to edit them all.

I am wanting to finish taking all my photos by Friday 8th April so I can spend time editing them to touch them up to make sure that they are fully presentable for displaying.

I will aim to finish all of my editing of my images by Friday 6th May so I can have time to organise them and get them ready for printing and displaying.

The launch date I am planning for my photos is Friday 20th May.

EQUIPMENT

Camera – The camera that I will mainly be using is a Nikon D800. This is because it is a very high quality camera and Nikon is a very reliable, trustworthy brand.

Tripod – I will be using a tripod to take at least one of my images, the Sheffield at night scene. This is so that the camera will remain still when doing long exposures, still making my images look sharp.
Filters – I will be using a red lens filter called a when taking one of my photos on a busy road (most probably Ecclesall Road). This is so that I can give one of my images a different and more aesthetically look.

PROPS AND MODELS

I will not be using any props or models, I will be capturing Sheffield as it is, in its raw format. I will be using the natural landscapes and daily life to make up my images. This is so that I can show Sheffield in its natural beauty, without the need for anybody in the background.

I will not be using any planned props in my photos. Only natural props that are already in the locations that I am going to be shooting in. An example of the natural props will be the cars on Ecclesall Road that I will be taking a long exposure of. I cannot plan these cars to stop and start, so they are natural props that aren’t in my control.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS.

I am not planning on needing any permissions for taking my photos. I am not planning to take any shots of people for my final images and the locations that I am planning to take my photos in are all public locations, so no permissions will be needed.

Recce forms are designed to assess a location and its suitability for providing an area/landscape for a photo. They are used for photographers to determine if a location is safe enough to shoot in. They are important because they highlight what is and isn’t wrong with a location. I will need to complete one for the bit of road above South Street Park near the train station.

Risk assessments are forms that check a location/shoot for potential risks that could disrupt the shoot or cause harm to the photographer. We use them to double check areas to make sure they are safe and that there are no hidden risks. These forms are important because they help provide security for the photographers that they are going to be taking photos in a safe environment. I will need to complete one for Ecclesall Road as that is a main road with a number of risks that could be posed to me.

I am planning to stand above South Street Park, next to the train station for one of my photos so I can capture Sheffield town centre and its night life. I will have to be careful that I or the camera do not fall over in this space as it is very close to the edge of a drop.
I am going to be taking some photos at a Sheffield Sharks basketball game, as basketball is something that Sheffield is known and recognised for. I will have to be careful that I am not interfering with the play as I will be sitting very close to the action, courtside.

LEGAL AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS.

Copyright is a legal means of protecting an author’s work. (https://www.techterms.com/definition/copyright).
I will not be needing any copyright permissions in my project as I will not be using any models or locations that are copyrighted or require permissions to use. I will be using natural landscapes of Sheffield in my images, which are free for all to see.

Model release is a legal release typically signed by the subject of a photograph granting the permission to publish the photograph in one form or another. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_release).
For my project I will not be needing to gain permission to take my photos, as the places where I am planning to take them are public places with no non-obvious restrictions on what I can’t take photos of.

Misrepresentation is a case of misunderstanding something or (interpreting it incorrectly). – (https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/misinterpretation).
It is important that I don’t misrepresent a scene as I don’t want to show what’s in the image in the wrong format or context.

CONTINGENCIES

If the weather is poor and will ruin the quality of the shoot, then I will plan to take the photos on a different day. If there is traffic or people in the way of the camera, I will wait till the right time or come back a different day to take the photos. If the camera equipment fails then I will take back up just in case. The spare items I am planing to take are SD cards and a lens. If the camera fails, which is very unlikely, then I will have to shoot the photos another day.
