Duncan Philpott Analysis

Duncan Philpott came into our college as a guest speaker and we were able to meet him and ask questions on his work and general photography experience.

The genre of photography that Duncan specialises in is sports photography. He mainly takes photos of mountain biking. Some of the parts that he enjoys about being a freelance photographer is that he gets to travel, be outside, do something that he loves for a living and that he gets to show his personality through the photos that he takes.

Some of the downsides of his job is that there is no job security, there is a risk of him hurting himself as he is in the environment of danger and risk in the form of extreme sport, he could be working all day for specific shoots, he has to do everything himself as he runs his own business and he has a limited budget for each shoot, he can't overspend as he'll be losing money.

The type of shoots that he completes are photojournalism, personal, editorial and ones for his Instagram page.

The rules of photography that he mainly uses are narrative and composition. Duncan captures the mountain bikers in high action, competition situations. His images tell the story of the competitors that are trying to win the races. I can also infer that the riders are highly motivated and their adrenalin levels must be high due to the concentration on their faces. He also arranges his photos by placing the riders in one part of the image and having other parts like the sea and rocks in other parts. This can be seen in the examples of Duncan's images below.
